The Mind is a Powerful thing to Waste!
The month of May brought flocks of NYC Chapter members, seeking to feed their minds, to the Annual Conference and Expo held at the Gaylord Hotel in downtown National Harbor, Maryland. Another excellent conference in the books! We learned, learned and learned some more, networked, shopped and socialized and returned home mentally exhausted yet intellectually satisfied.

We kicked off the chapter’s educational programming on June 5th with How to Use Social Media to Land Your Dream Job, presented by Nathan Rosen, a local social media guru. The session presented jointly by the HR and Technology Teams, was held at Lee & Associates, NYC LLC. Attendees learned how recruiters use social media to source candidates, the importance of everyone having a digital presence and the best features to use on various social media platforms for maximum returns. Janine Nedd, Team Lead, for Human Resources tells the session had an excellent turn out and very informative for all in attendance. Sincere thanks for our sponsor, BP, Smart Choice Communications.

On June 26^th, the Operations Management Team organized a great educational session on “NYC Real Estate Trends and Moving Hurdles,” held at the law firm of Vedder Price. Panelists gave a comprehensive overview of the leasing and moving process from beginning to the end, with ample time allotted for Q & A.

We did not relax just because it was the summer! In fact, the month of July saw us charting a new course in educational choices. On July 10^th the D&I Team, led by Santa Medina, gave us the Bullying and Harassment in the Workplace seminar. A very timely and important session. As Administrators we must keep abreast of and comply with employment law pertaining not only to staff, but all personnel on all levels, including anyone relating to our staff, vendors, or clients within the office environment. Rosalind Fink, employment attorney at Brill & Meisel presented and provided us with an update on the federal, state and city laws and legal requirements. Ms. Fink provided guidelines on updating policy statements, complaint procedures, investigations, and training. The session was well received and many suggested a Part II. Stay tuned for updates. July was also the month our Times Square Level Business Partner, Emergency Skills, Inc. conducted the 8-hour Mental Health First-Aid (MHFA) certification course. Classes were held on alternate Tuesdays and Thursdays at the offices of chapter Business Partner, LDI Color Toolbox. Here are what members who took part had to say:

Stephanie Ransom of Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin was “a very satisfied and educated participant” said – Although I only attended two out of the four sessions, I found the sessions to be so enriching, interactive, and pertinent to the issues we face on a daily basis, not only at work but in our personal lives as well. I felt these sessions should be offered to all firms within the chapter to experience the same as we did. Your Executive Board will not be disappointed.
Rick D’Aversa, of Zimmet Law Group, “One of the best ALA presentations to date. The people at Emergency Skills delivered 8 hours of very informative and helpful information that will only enhance our skills both at the office and elsewhere. Also, a big Thank You to LDI for their hospitality”.
Sharon Stewart, of Lowenstein Sandler LLP, “this was by far one of the best sessions the chapter has put on. We deal with people, personalities, and their problems in our daily interaction with our employees that some of their issues are so subtle that it is often misunderstood or misplaced, which could also lead to disciplinary actions. Having this extra arsenal in our resource “tool box” will help us make more informed decisions. In some instances, we may be able to guide the employee to the right resource to get help or seek answers to their problems”.
Rose Hirsch, of Goodwin Procter LLP, “I thought this course was very informative and gave me the knowledge on how to deal with people who may have mental issues. It taught me to look at the situation and understand more about what may be going on with a certain individual and how to handle it using a different perspective. This course should be a requirement for every manager, no matter what industry”.

On August 30^th we brought you “Leader vs. Manager, Which Hat Should I Wear?” This was the first webinar in a 3-part Mind, Body and Soul presentation series, hosted by the HR Team and led by our new Times Square Business Partner, Loeb Leadership. Natalie Loeb treated attendees to an exciting and informative hour of leadership training.

September 6^th the Finance Team brought us a session entitled “The Changing Tax Laws” that was presented and hosted by chapter Business Partner, Anchin.

September 17^th saw us learning Tips for Navigating Marketing in the Legal Industry. September 25^th was our first networking luncheon of the chapter year when attendees were treated to an intriguing CSR panel discussion with stalwarts in the Sustainability, Diversity and Inclusion and Community Service disciplines in law firms, highlighting an ongoing collaboration between ALANYC and the Law Firm Sustainability Network (LFSN). Finally, the second webinar in the Mind, Body and Soul presentation series entitled “Leading with the Mind”, was held on September 27^th. This time Natalie Loeb and Robin Farber focused on mindfulness training. The series culminates with Natalie’s breakout session at our October Educational Symposium.

October 4^th was our CannaBiz panel an interactive discussion hosted by Chapter’s Business Partner, Cohen Reznick

October 11^th, the Wealth Management Team brought you the first session in their Roadmap to Financial Health series for Law Firm Professionals.

October 19, ALANYC’s 13^th Annual Educational Symposium & Exposition – Embracing Change, Building Stronger Leaders for Tomorrow.

November 7, the Finance Team hosted a breakfast roundtable open discussion.

November 8, the Chapter hosted a Town Hall luncheon for Members and Business Partners.

November 14, the Diversity and Inclusion Team presented a session on Autism Spectrum Disorder

November 17, The BP Team held its second BPHangoutswithALANYC event with Equine Assisted Leadership Development.

Your leadership is immensely thrilled to be able to bring such diverse education to the Chapter!

ALANYC provides you with more ways to learn. Did you know that our chapter now has several SIGs available to you? The SIG program, led by Meredith Lonner, MBA, CLM, has been active and growing. Becoming a member of a Special Interest Group, “SIG” is a great starting point.

The Small Firm SIG – consisting of member firms with less than 50 attorneys and led by Rick D’Aversa, meets for monthly brown bag lunch discussions. Periodically, business partners who are subject matter experts, are invited to speak about topical issues that are important to this group. At their August meeting, the group discussed Onboarding. Please watch our weekly Events and Resources at-a-Glance communications for future meetings.

Branch Office SIG, led by Michelle Doran, holds its quarterly brown bag lunch meetings at the offices of Dorsey & Whitney, LLP. Discussions are held on a wide range of matters that are unique to branch office managers.

Anyone need CLMs?

Mimi DeMars, Team Leader for the Certifications & Accreditations Team has been hard at work putting us on the map! Having recently been elevated to Approved CLM Provider status, the NYC Chapter is one of only 17 Chapters that have earned this designation this year! What does this mean? Well, in a nutshell, we can now approve our own eligible education sessions without contacting ALA Headquarters. We will be able to market our educational opportunities using the CLM Approved Provider seal and the NY Chapter has been included in a list of approved providers on the ALA website. This is quite an achievement for ALANYC.

The Certified Legal Manager (CLM) Approved Provider program was established to create a clear system for ALA chapters to identify courses that qualify for application and recertification credit for the CLM certification program. Look for Team Leader Mimi, who heads up the CLM Study Program for the 2018-19-chapter year. Joining the Study Group will connect you with other members who are studying for the exam and, together, help each other prepare! Also coming in January, is our CLM 101 Panel discussion (Demystifying CLM), where panelists will discuss individual experiences and talk about ways this important designation has helped their careers.
